Haxted purchased The Crest, an excellent, if tired, example of detached mid-century housing, in 2012. Originally built for a notable local industrial family, the property was completed in 1953 as a replacement for the previous dwelling that was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1940 during the Battle of Britain. Sitting in the Conservation Area adjacent to Kenley Aerodrome the house had been requisitioned by 11 Fighter Command as the Officer’s Mess. Driven by a passion for mid-century modern architecture, Haxted embarked on a restoration, internal refurbishment and wholesale programme of replacement services, in 2012. Designs are currently being drawn up for a single storey pavilion extension.
